This is a traded service in Luton as well as to private schools and those beyond.
The SENS Advisory Service (3 to 16 years) works with schools to improve their systems for identification, assessment and intervention so that they are more effective in ensuring that pupils with SEND maximise their progress.
The service works with SENCOs and inclusion managers to help them audit their practice and prepare for inspection.
Schools are supported to maximise the attainment of this group and find the most effective way to record their progress.
This service increases the capacity to teach SEND pupils and organise their special educational provision effectively through:
- SENCOs
- inclusion managers
- teachers
- support staff
Benefits of the service
The service facilitates early support and intervention so that fewer children require high level support or an education health and care plan (EHCP).
Details of service
- Acting as a critical friend for all aspects of SEN
- Individual assessments of literacy and numeracy
- Teacher/support staff surgeries
- Support with EHCP process
- Attending SLMs and professionals meetings
- Target setting and problem solving with staff to enable them to develop their skills in teaching pupils with SEND
- Providing training and support for all staff
- Delivering bespoke professional development and INSET
- Data analysis in order to promote whole school best SEND practice
- Preparation for OFSTED inspections
- For pre-school children an observation of the child and consult with staff to:
- identify specific barriers to learning and social inclusion
- give advice and support strategies provided in a written report
- Advise settings on referrals to partner agencies such as:
- Edwin Lobo
- Speech and Language Therapy
- OT
- SENS
- ASD team
- SENS Speech, Language and Communication Needs team
- Advise settings on applications for Early Years Resourced places and requests for EHCPs
Terms
- Obligations on the part of the school or academy
- Obtain permission from the family for visit to take place
- Inform the parents/carers and teaching staff that the advisor is observing the child or young person
- Provide all relevant information including copies of recent professional reports any provision made for the pupil and the latest Pupil Support Plan (PSP), pupil passport or provision map
- Provide a quiet space to work with the child or young person if requested
- Contact a member of the team by phone on 01582 548151 to cancel or rearrange appointments
- Contribute to discussions regarding the pupil’s progress and expected outcomes
- To monitor the pupil’s progress against the advice contained in the report
- Check the report before sending to parents
