Welcome to our first SEND newsletter

10/06/2020

Welcome to our first SEND newsletter aimed at all professionals working in Luton. Following our SEND inspection in December 2018 and the publication of our SEND Written Statement of Action in early 2019, colleagues across the system have been working hard to put in place the actions in our improvement plan and much progress has been made building on the good work already in Luton.

This first newsletter has been designed to ensure that all professionals working with families, children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities are aware of all the new developments and can use this to inform their work and talk to families about the new offer developments that are available. In this first edition, as means of a taster we have included an item on Luton’s new Working Together Charter developed with parents which explains the importance of co –production when working with children, young people and families; the development of a new Parent Carer Forum in Luton; an update on the new Luton Local Offer and the new Sendias Service. Information is also included on the new Talking Takes Off pathway to speech, language and communication needs for both the early years and school aged children.

Our Local Offer has been developed by working with parents and it provides a wealth of information for parents, carers and young people as well as professionals. Please look out for our Local Offer virtual launch on the 15th June 2020 to raise awareness of the value of the Local Offer so that you can promote the site to parents and young people.   Our new Sendias service is now operating independently and the team have established a new standalone website. For more information on both of these, please see the articles below.

Included in this edition is an article about how Luton is working with Contact, a national organisation, who are supporting the local area to establish a new Parent Carer Forum. The PCF is an important forum for parents to give their views about how services are working and to assist in coproduction work. This sits alongside new engagement opportunities for all parents to get involved and provide their views.

I do hope you find the information in the new newsletter useful.  Please can I ask you to cascade the newsletters to your colleagues and staff in your team, service or organisation as we have a limited email distribution currently. If you would like to receive your own copy of the newsletter please email: SENDluton@luton.gov.uk . If you have any items you would like to include in future editions again please let me know using the same email address.
