Bookstart is a national programme that encourages all parents and carers to enjoy books with their children from as early an age as possible. Bookstart aims to give free packs of books to every baby in the UK, to inspire and create a love of reading that will give children a flying start in life. And most of all show that books are fun!
Bookstart Baby packs are usually delivered to families by health professionals at health visits before the baby’s first birthday. Parents and carers can also obtain both packs from their local Luton library. Find your local Library
Bookstart gifts free books to all children at two key ages before school to help families read together every day and inspire children with a rewarding love of books.
Bookstart Baby pack
Your health visitor, or other health professional, should gift this yellow bag in your baby's first year to help you share stories, rhymes and songs.
The content varies, but will include two board books, finger puppets, and a booklet of tips and ideas for sharing books.
Bookstart Treasure gift
Your child will receive their special gift envelope when they are 3–4 years old, from their nursery or early years setting. Inside is a picture book for you to share, plus a friendly booklet with tips and ideas for reading together.
Packs are also available in other languages, contact the Bookstart Coordinator for more information.
Children with additional needs
We offer packs and resources alongside the Bookstart Baby pack and Bookstart Treasure gift:
- Bookshine for children who are deaf
- Booktouch for children with a visual impairment
- Bookstart Star for children with conditions affecting their fine motor skills
Please ask at your local library if you haven't received the Bookstart Baby pack by the time your child turns one, or the Treasure gift before they turn five.
