As a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) I work with both Adults and Children that have a wide range of mental health problems and to help them overcome their difficulties. I have specialist knowledge of working with children who have learning disabilities such as Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Tourette Syndrome and other Behavioural difficulties.

What is CBT? Therapy can make a difference!

CBT is an evidence-based therapy that explores the link between how thoughts can impact how you feel and behave. The therapist and client work together to look at more beneficial thinking styles, creating positive feelings and altering behavioursCBT has a good evidence base for a wide range of mental health problems in adults, older adults, children and young people. CBT is the first-line treatment for mental health problems and is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. CBT can be used if you are on medication which has been prescribed by your GP. You can also use CBT on its own. This will depend on the difficulty you want help with.

How many sessions will I need? That all depends on you!

I offer individual sessions of CBT and the number of sessions depends on the difficulty you need help with. Sessions will usually be between six and twenty sessions and are an hour long.  An assessment is required to understand your specific difficulties and to set goals that you would like to achieve.

I am able to provide CBT in a wide range of settings such as therapy room, in the comfort of your homein schools, over the telephone and via skype. CBT can be easily accessed especially for those who have busy lives.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety can be described as a feeling of unease, such as a worry of fear which can range from mild to severe. The feelings of anxiety can interfere with daily life. Anxiety is the main symptom of several conditions, including panic disorder, phobias, such as agoraphobia or claustrophobia.

A person must experience the following symptom’s to be diagnosed with an anxiety-related disorder

 

  • Feeling nervous, anxious or on edge
  • Not being able to stop or control worrying
  • Worrying too much about different things
  • Trouble relaxing
  • Being so restless that it is hard to sit still
  • Becoming easily annoyed or irritable
  • Feeling afraid as if something awful might happen

The most common disorder known as Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a long term condition that causes you to feel anxious about anything and everything. People who have GAD will feel anxious most days and can struggle to relax. They can feel restless, agitated, have difficulty concentrating or sleeping, experience physical symptoms such as chest pains, dizziness or heart palpitations.

Research

CBT is effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders and is the most practised form of modern psychotherapy. A lot of therapists that don’t identify themselves as CBT therapists also use CBT techniques in their practice. There has been much research to test the efficacy of CBT; one particular research looked at CBT versus placebo for anxiety disorders (Hofmann SG & Smits JA. (2008). They found support for the use of CBT in anxiety disorders. Specifically, the severity of anxiety symptoms was decreased for people who took CBT over placebo, and the effect of this decrease was most significant for people with obsessive-compulsive disorder and acute stress disorder.
