Virtual School

Luton’s Virtual School for Looked after Children was set up in 2010.

The school works with designated teachers in schools, social workers, foster carers and School Improvement Advisors to close the achievement gap of Children in Care.

Every Local Authority must have a Virtual School Head; this is a statutory requirement under the Children and Families Act 2014. The role of virtual school head teacher is currently being undertaken by Claire Lenihan and Sandy Hamilton-Clarke, who are also advisory teachers in the virtual school. Their role is to champion the needs and pursue the achievement of children looked after by Luton and those placed in Luton schools by other authorities. Looked after Children nationally, and in Luton, significantly under-achieve at each Key Stage. The number of Looked after Children varies throughout the year; there are usually between 300 and 340 on roll from Reception to Year 11.
