Step 3 – Is an assessment needed?

When we receive your request for an EHC needs assessment we

  • log it onto a data base as soon as the request is received and,
  • write to confirm we have received your request and that this is being considered.

In considering whether an EHC needs assessment is necessary, the Local Authority will consider whether there is evidence that despite the early years provider, school or post 16 institution having taken relevant and purposeful action to identify, assess and meet the special educational needs of the child or young person, they have not made expected progress.  To inform their decision we will take into account a wide range of evidence

Within 6 weeks we will decide whether or not to carry out the assessment.  If the request is

  • agreed, we will set a date during week 14 to meet with you to discuss the outcomes and support arrangements for your child
  • not agreed, we will explain the reasons in writing and offer you an appointment to meet to discuss the reasons behind the panel decision.
